Oily Paintings

January 17 - Feb 9, 2008

I named the show, "Oily Paintings" early on so that I wouldn't be tempted to use any medium other than oil paint. Normally, I switch from one medium to the next while making a series of works for a show (such as paintings to dolls to watercolours) but I knew that the combination of moods would work best with the deep colours and blending possibilities that oil paints can achieve. I also knew that the subject matter would include a lot of liquids and shadows and the name went well with that, too.

The artwork that I admire these days usually involves subject matter that's either supernaturally disquieting, or relaxing and familiar (like a portrait of someone reading a book). The "Oily Paintings" series finds that these two elements can be combined successfully if rendered in a clear, attractive style.
