Exhibition - Upcoming

Eric Doeringer
Survey
June 6 - Sept 8, 2013

This summer, NO FOUNDATION presents Survey, an exhibition by New York-based artist Eric Doeringer. Survey features Doeringer's artwork from the past five years, recreating works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, On Kawara, Edward Ruscha, John Baldessari, Richard Prince and Damien Hirst. The gallery will be re-hung every two weeks, with each mini-exhibition containing Doeringer's versions of works by a different group of artists.

Doeringer has replicated artworks spanning movements from Pop through Postmodernism. The original pieces emphasized ideas over the hand of the artist and questioned traditional notions of authorship and artistry. By recreating these works, Doeringer expands upon the original artists' concepts and shows how we continue to grapple with the issues raised by their artwork.

Some of Doeringer's recreations clearly diverge from the originals. His version of Andy Warhol's painting of Coca-Cola bottles depicts contemporary plastic soda bottles in place of the earlier painting's glass bottles, and his remake of Charles Ray's All My Clothes shows Doeringer - not Ray - modeling his entire wardrobe in a series of sixteen photographs. Other works, such as Doeringer's versions of Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings and Damien Hirst's spot paintings, are virtually indistinguishable from the originals. However, despite the visual similarities, Doeringer's works have vastly different conceptual underpinnings as market/historical value than the originals.

This complex relationship between the original and the copy is the heart of Doeringer's oeuvre. Survey presents a wide array of Doeringer's projects, demonstrating that by copying the art of others, Doeringer has paradoxically built a highly individual body of work.

The schedule for
Survey is as follows:
