Oscar De Las Flores

A Provisional History of the Western World

June 22 , 2007 - Jul 21, 2007

Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects is proud to present Oscar De Las Flores' second solo exhibition in the gallery.

De Las Flores recent work is a series of small scale figurative work that presents a compendium of dense imagery in drawing. Once again we encounter the complex world that De Las Flores loves to navigate. His rendering is a tribute to historical drawing that is best described as neo-barroque.

The suite, comprised of twelve images, consists of a series of highly detailed, but completely improvised scenarios in which amalgams of characters from the historical past, the present, and the imagination interact in a convoluted narrative recreation. A mixture of the grotesque and the beautiful, the classical and the subconcious, De Las Flores' images mingle in a rapturous ebullience; being hallucinatory and/ or poetic as demanded by the subject matter in question.

The images, impregnated with a classical look and done in the very traditional pen and ink technique on Japanese paper, represent in a labyrinthine manner the convoluted state of the world, making constant references to literature, pop art, history and art history. The images pulsate with their own sense of life and urgency, while at the same time mocking and criticizing issues of representation, political discourse and other concepts of importance for the artist in an elegant, allegorical manner,
and of course, with a strong sense of poignancy.
